ASRY Invests $188m in Ship Repair Ops

As Bahrain’s Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard Co (ASRY) celebrates its 35th Anniversary, this week the company officially inaugurated and opened for business its new 1.38km Repair Quay Wall. The official inauguration of the new Repair Quay Wall is not just a significant event for ASRY but also for Bahrain’s fast growing maritime sector and economy, and is a strong signal of the yard’s intent to enter more vigorously the business in the offshore and rig outfitting niche.

Since starting life in October1977 as the Middle East’s first shipyard designed specifically for the repair of Super Tankers, the yard has grown and grown. Today, ASRY’s original 500,000dwt capacity graving dock is complemented by two floating docks capable of accommodating vessels up to 80,000dwt and 120,000dwt respectively, two of the largest slipways in the region and 15 repair berths, all backed-up by a comprehensive array of workshops and technical services. 

Commenting on the opening of the new Repair Quay Wall, ASRY’s Chairman, Shaikh Daij bin Salman bin Daij Al Khalifa said: ‘ASRY was the first shiprepair yard in the Middle East and since its inception has established itself as a leader both in the region and internationally.  This is a reflection of the overall quality of the yard, its facilities and the skilled personnel available. ASRY’s continued growth and unremitting excellence has solidified its prominence among shipping hubs around the world and the celebration of entering our 35th year in operation is a great way to thank all of those who have supported ASRY over the years I’m delighted to say that the baby of the shiprepair industry in 1977 has matured into truly a world leader.

ASRY’s new 1.38km Repair Quay Wall, located north east of the existing yard in an area known as the ASRY Basin, has been designed by the UK’s Royal Haskoning and built by local company Nass Contracting. With an alongside water depth of 12m, the new facility is capable of accommodating three 300,000dwt vessels simultaneously. Craneage will comprise two level-luffing cranes, running on rails, designed and built by Germany’s Ardelt.  The cranes, of the company’s Kranich range of single-jib cranes, are lightweight, flexible units, offering extremely low maintenance and tailored for the demanding requirements of shiprepair as well as offshore rig repairs and installation work. One of the cranes will be a Kranich 1000-47, the other a Kranich 1000-28, both with a maximum lift of 30 ton swl. Ardelt will install both new cranes in March 2012.

ASRY’s facilities expansion programme is not just about the new Repair Quay Wall.  The investment also includes the construction of a 200,000m2 hard standing offshore fabrication area, with load out quay, and four brand new shipyard tugs. The tugs will replace the yard’s ageing fleet of six 32 tonne bollard pull tugs, which have been in service since 1977.
